First
of all, I love this lecture and I couldn't believe time goes that quick. There is
only one word all through this lecture, PICTURE!
Picture storied are everywhere and a picture
is worth a thousand words. In the ancient time, those people didn't have
language but they still could communicate for using pictures. There is one “language”
named “JiaGu” in China and it basically uses picture to present meaning. For instance,
the image below shows the word “fish”.
There are many pictures in church to show stories
and people will all understand the meaning in this visual communication.
There are some knowledge should be remembered.
“1860’s Newspapers illustrated with line Drawings. First Published Photo in a newspaper
(Halftone only) rather than engraved image 1879 “Steinway hall” (The Daily graphic)
NY. The first color reproduction in newspaper is 1936 Scottish Daily Record
& Mail.”
There are other developments in photo-journalism
like digital manipulation. There are many “thing” you can do after the phone be
taken. From the phone below you can see how "wonderful" the Photoshop is?
Marissa Calligeros who awarded News Photo of
the Year Qld Media Awards in 2009 (plus highly commended in walkley awards). From
the picture “Jonathon Thurston’s Uncle’s funeral”, we summary of “what makes a
great photo?”
There are six points we should notice to
tack a good photo.
- Framing
- Focus
- Angle & Point of View (POV)
- Exposure (or Light)
- Timing (Shutter speed)
- Capturing “The Moment”
The rule of thirds is one of the important
elements to make a good photo as well.

For the moving photo, there is one element
should be noticed. That is Sound dimension.
“If it makes you
laugh, if it makes you cry, if it rips out your heart, that’s a good
picture."
Eddie Adams, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photojournalist
"A picture has no meaning at all if it
can't tell a story."
